Community Outreach
I believe that science is for everyone! At the local level, exposing young children to science makes scientists more accessible and relatable. Interacting with the general public also increases scientific literacy and awareness. At the national level, it is increasingly important that scientists relay the importance of continued federal funding to policymakers. Below are examples of how I have participated in these endeavors throughout my career.
PUBLIC SCIENCE
In 2021, I was one of the winners of the Share Your Research Competition through iBiology. I participated in a series of workshops to record and produce a talk about my research for a wide audience, which you can view here.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
From 2017-2019, I was a Scout Instructor at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Tampa, FL. There, I created and taught curriculum for Girl, Cub, and Boy Scouts. Workshops covered a range of STEM topics. Engaging with these students and their parents has shaped how I approach science communication with the public.
NATIONAL ENGAGEMENT
In 2018, I was awarded an Emerging Public Policy Leadership Award from the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS). I flew to Washington D.C. and received science communication and policy training. The workshop culminated in meeting U.S. Representative Kathy Castor and other Florida policymakers to lobby for continued NSF funding. Read more about the award here.
MENTORSHIP
From 2016-2018, I served as a graduate mentor for the USF-HHMI STEM Academy program. I led incoming freshman that identified as STEM majors in a week-long program that aimed to create a sense of community, introduce basic lab techniques, and increase STEM retention. Read about our impact here.
YOUTH EDUCATION
From 2014-2017, I created and was the graduate student liaison for a chapter of Roots & Shoots, an organization created by Dr. Jane Goodall. Undergraduate and graduate students helped students at Pizzo Elementary complete group science projects and graduate students gave science demos for a hands-on learning experience.
